Asari Headpieces Are Go!
Friday, July 24th, 2009I know what you’re thinking. You want to make an Asari headpiece for a Mass Effect costume and you’ve read my mini comic tutorial. You made a couple of phone calls around town and gathered up the weird and wonderful supplies. But you can’t help but wonder if this tutorial actually works; is it possible for a fan of Mass Effect, using a guide made by another fan, to make an Asari latex headpiece, or was the result of my Liara latex endeavour just a fluke?
Ladies and Gents, I proudly present HMWSG X’s Asari latex headpiece!
Didn’t she do a fantastic job!? I did a wee bit of tweaking with the photo (as she rushed the headpiece application for the shot) but WOW. Talk about awesome. Look at all the photos here! AND she documented her process. Holy cow! And she even made a Tali’Zorah nar Rayya costume to boot!
So if you want to make a headpiece…it can be done! It has been done and it shall be done again! HMWSG X and I sent message back and forth, talking about supplies, art techniques and frustrations, so if YOU have any questions, any issues, hey, just ask! Drop me a line at kris[atsymbol]tatterhood.com. I’m not a professional, but I’ll be sure to answer your question personally.
And if you want to learn more about latex and prosthetic and all that jazz, check out The Effects Lab.
Right now I’m working on another headpiece (because those buckets of slush latex aren’t going to use themselves!) so soon, soon, I promise, I will post actual pictures of my Liara T’Soni costume. (But check out other Mass Effect fans in costume in the meanwhile). I’m trying a few different techniques so might be adding a new page to the mini tutorial.

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009Part Two of the birthday gift!
(original idea and artwork – HanyousBlood. Used stock as reference for Saint, the Great Dance, from the fantastic stock of FantasyStock.)
Hitch
Monday, July 20th, 2009I had no clue what to do for my sister’s birthday – being po’, I decided to make something so I asked her for a theme. She said ‘mythology – Greek or Egyptian.’ So she got a Greek-ish card and 2 Egyptian-ish paintings.
Done on papyrus, with watercolours and pencil. (First time on papyrus…tricky stuff).
Totally *not* my idea at all. See this glorious piece for ‘the real thing’ which is 100 times better than mine. Done by the very talented HanyousBlood
Used stock as reference for Hitch, the Siberian Husky, from the wonderful account of EssenceOfPerception.
Quick Card Two
Thursday, July 16th, 2009Decided it would be wise to show the inside of the card (thus revealing the true message of the gorgon and cyclops).
Inspired by this lovely/funny piece.
Quick Card
Thursday, July 16th, 2009I had fun doing this, right up until the point where I was painting the front of the card and my index finger went numb. And then I messed up. And had to do some really bad lettering. BUT it’s the thought that counts…right?
Please excuse the blurriness. I wish I had a decent excuse for the bad picture. Inspired by this wonderful piece.
Happy Birthday Jen!
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009Happy Birthday sis (if you are following this)! Hmm and I guess if you are, I sorta ruined a card I made for you. Err and don’t come back to my site later this week, and next week, because I will probably post your birthday present. Schmaybe. (Present is in the mail, it’ll be there soon!)
But here’s a hint for what the gift is: Bareka
Oh Tesla
Friday, July 10th, 2009Seeing as how it has been a very, very busy week and today is Nikola Tesla’s birthday, here’s a little blast from the past PLUS it’s also work that I actually did not do! Kate Beaton did the comic – I just decided to colour it for funsies.
I coloured a bunch of Beaton’s comics – I got to eleven, but this was all before my wrist surgery, so one day my right hand violently forced me asked me nicely if I would mind stopping all additional activities and just sit quietly with an ice pack and watch the telly.
Happily that all has now changed! All this week I have been colouring! Yesterday? I coloured! Day before that? Coloured! What am I going to do tomorrow? Colour! My weekend plans? Colouring – both on the computer AND with ‘real’ media, oooOOoooh. And if I look at my planner I see I have penciled in ‘colour’ for all of next week. The fun never stops! (I am saying that in a serious, not sarcastic, manner – I really do enjoy colouring, and specifically, what it is I’m colouring, which happens to be stuff for our next game). There will be a smidgen of drawing that will take place, but otherwise, col-lour-ring.
I’m very excited about the current colouring. It’s in a different style that what I did above, and I can’t wait to show it one day.
